as a natural way for me to pass the time and keep my two younger sisters
entertained.
I currently live in the Audi-filled suburbs of Seattle with

Just for laughs, here are some of the jobs I’ve had in the

morgue attendant, and autopsy assistant.
And I’m also a recovering LARPer. (I blame it on my crazy
college days)

What inspired you to start writing?

Interview/Giveaway with Shiloh Walker
Posted by
Lynette
AND
GIVEAWAY OF IF YOU HEAR HER
Shiloh Walker has been writing since she was a kid. She fell
in love with vampires with the book Bunnicula and has worked her way up to the
more…ah…serious works of fiction. She loves reading and writing anything
paranormal, anything fantasy, and nearly every kind of romance. Once upon a
time she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full time and lives with her
family in the Midwest. She writes
paranormal and contemporary romance, as well as romantic suspense.
In your previous Inside the Author's Studio interview on my blog, you mentioned that you always wanted to write. What led you to writing romance and what was the first romance novel that you've ever read?
I'm not entirely sure...It seems like I've always written,
but in high school, most of the stuff I wrote was epic fantasy. Then one day, I had an idea for a
romance. I can't say what it inspired
it. I don't even remember which idea I first messed around with, really,
although the first full-length book I wrote was No Longer Mine.
The first romance I read?
Rosemary Rogers' The Wanton.
Oh, man. I generally
have 2-3 full length works contracted with my publishers, Ballantine &
Berkley, in New York and I work in the shorter stuff around those, so it just
depends. Typically in the morning, I
don't get as much writing done-I need to wake my brain up. I do my errands, the post office, go to the
gym, editing, whatever, and then I write from about noon to five or six. I try to stop around then, because that's
when my kids get home and unless I've got a heavy deadline crushing me, I try
not to work as much when they are home.
You write in
several subgenres of romance. I know it would be hard for you to pick a
favorite, but can you tell me one aspect of each genre that captures your
attention and makes you love writing in that genre?
I really can't... the reason I bounce around is because I've
got a short attention span and bouncing around keeps me from getting
bored. Doesn't that sound terrible?
I loved, If You
Hear Her. What made you come up with that series?
Lena. It all started
with her. Her character just sort of
appeared in my head.
One of the
aspects that I love about your novels is the deep respect that the hero and
heroine show for each other, even when they are on opposite sides of an issue.
I know this is weird thing to say but I don't always find that when reading
romance novels. Since you're characters are always what draw me to your novels,
I've always been curious if when you are writing, do you come up with the
characters first or the plot? Or does it depend and why?
It's almost always the characters. They are there, and they have a story to tell
me. I'm just there to get their story on
paper, so to speak.
I'm kinda dying
here needing to know this . . .. Can you tell us what's coming up next in this
trilogy?
Hope & Remy.
That's about all I've got to say on that issue... :)
(Lynette again: Sorry for the interruption. LOL.)
What are you
writing now?
At this very moment...absolutely nothing. I finished my current book, STOLEN, another
romantic suspense, and I think I'm going to take a day to decompress and then
I'll be starting on my next project, a book that will follow the world of THE
MISSING and THE DEPARTED.
I saw a blog post
where you mentioned that you recently got a great idea for a new series at
Georgia Romance Writers? Can you give us a hint about that?
Um...no. Sorry. LOL, but I can't. I'm slightly paranoid and when I talk about a
story too soon, it kind of dies on me and I lose it.
And lastly
because I'm looking in my kitchen as we speak and am realizing that I need to
wrap this up so that I think about cleaning
up (thinking because I will probably sit and read instead of clean), if
I looked in your kitchen now, would it be spotless, dirty, or disaster area?
Probably somewhere between spotless and I need to straighten
it up a little. My husband is a borderline neat freak and I can't stand too
much of a mess, but I'm too lazy to constantly be straightening up or
cleaning. So nothing in this place is
ever spotless, but it never really gets to that dirty zone, either.
Thank you Shiloh for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with me today. Ms. Walker has graciously agreed to send a copy of If You Hear Her (awesome, awesome book by the way) see my review HERE to one lucky person who comments to this post. You have midnight Sunday EST to comment. Good luck!

THEA HARRISON
Thea Harrison is the pen name for author Teddy Harrison. Thea has traveled extensively, having lived in England and explored Europe for several years. Now she resides in northern California. She wrote her first book, a romance, when she was nineteen and had sixteen romances published under the name Amanda Carpenter.
She took a break from writing to collect a couple of graduate degrees and a grown child. She experienced waitressing as a teenager, has worked as an activist for a non-profit consumer rights organization, has been a receptionist, an office manager, a penniless graduate student, a director of development and research, and a single mom. Her graduate degrees are in Philanthropic Studies and Library Information Science, but her first love has always been writing fiction. She's back with her paranormal Elder Races series. The release date for her first paranormal, Dragon Bound, is May 3, 2011.
She adores animals and currently resides with several small pets that have very large personalities.
THEA: Hi Lynette, thanks for having me on your blog today!LYNETTE: Umm, totally my honor. Let's begin . . .
Describe yourself in one sentence?
I can do that in one word: nerd.
What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
Argh, this kind of question is always so hard to answer! This week my answers are: Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits… one book? Wail! … smoke is coming out my ears. Just sayin. Okay, the book I would take is Patricia McKillip’s Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy. Yes, I know that’s three books. But they are put out in one volume now, so that counts, right?
As for the food, it would be chocolate. That’s the one answer that wouldn’t change. It would always be chocolate.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
An architect. Or Wonder Woman.
Which book do you wish you'd written?
Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
What makes you happy?
Lots of things make me happy. A long, leisurely talk with a good friend; a cuddle with my dogs; the surprise of falling in love with a really great book; vacations; chocolate!
What makes you angry?
Injustice, rudeness, bigotry, cruelty. Child or animal abuse. Littering.
Name five people how you'd like to invite to a dinner party?
I played this game with my family recently. I’m going to assume that the people could be dead or alive, or fictional, since this is all make-believe anyway. I would like to invite Gandalf, since he has such awesome fireworks. Also the Dalai Lama, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, and Robin Williams.
What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
The most recent thing that comes to mind is driving hairpin turns on the way to Mendocino in northern California. I’ve discovered I have quite a problem with that kind of narrow, winding road. There were times when the road had no shoulder at all—it simply ended in a drop where the outside line was supposed to be. I had to pull over several times to take a break.
What inspired you to start writing?
When I was a teenager and we went to stay at my aunt and uncle’s house in the country, I would read their books. They had Zane Grey westerns and Harlequin romances. Then when I was around sixteen or so I saw an article in People magazine about romance writers. I was convinced I could do it too, so I wrote my first romance when I was nineteen.
Where would you most like to live?
I’m not sure, but I do know that water would be involved. Lots of it. Maybe a house on a large lake or by the ocean.
What is your favorite curse word?
Boogers. Okay, anybody who reads my stories knows I get much saltier than that. But boogers is still fun to say.
Who is your favorite man candy?
There’s so much good man candy out these days! No doubt you’ll be relieved that I kept it down to one guy, two photos. Today I’m picking Joe Manganiello, who looks good with or without clothes.
Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
A very old boy falls for a very old girl. They’re surprised.
Thanks again for having me, Lynette! I had great fun answering your questions!
For the readers, who is your favorite man candy?
Lynette here . . . Thea is giving away a copy of her latest release Serpent's Kiss to a lucky blog commentor. Please respond to Thea's question in the comments to enter. KAREN ROSE SMITH
Karen Rose Smith's plots are all about emotion. She began writing when she listened to music and created stories to accompany the songs. After expressing feelings in poetry, earning a degree in English and French, completing short stories that became too long to find a market, she turned to her love of relationships in romance. This award-winning best-selling author has sold 75 books since 1991 and has published with Silhouette, Harlequin, Kensington and Meteor/Kismet. Her awards include the Golden Leaf in short contemporary romance, the Golden Quill in traditional romance, cataromance.com's award for Best Special Edition and Romance Review's Today's Best series romance award. Jane Bowers of Romance Reviews Today states: "Karen Rose Smith's storeyworlds are complete and realistic and lovely places to visit and revisit. She excels at stories that feature couples brought together by infants and children, and she handles her plots and characters with sublime sensitivity."
Karen is well-known for writing emotion. An only child, she spent a lot of time in her imagination and with books—Nancy Drew, Zane Gray, The Black Stallion and Anne of Green Gables. She dreamed of brothers and sisters and a big family like her mother and father came from, seven children in her mom's family and ten in her dad's. On weekends she was often surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins. This is the root of her plotlines that include small communities and family relationships as part of everyday living. She believes universal emotions unite us all and that is the reason she uses them to propel her plots.

Well, not for Dee, anyway. Her husband and kids, on the other hand...
If you would like to learn more about Dee and her work, please peruse around this site or visit her blog at http://www.deetenorio.com/Blog/.
Describe yourself in one sentence?
Once you get past the goofy, there's a loyal, determined girl in there.
What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
Ooooh, well, I'd rather take a mixed CD, lol, but likely take a concert edition CD of Racheal Yamagata (OMG, I love her.), one of Hubby's 3k page blank notebooks for my book (I have a still-mostly photographic memory, so all the books I've read are coming with me anyway, lol) and at least 1 last Coconut Cream pie. :) My favorite.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
First, a Solid Gold Dancer. After that, totally a writer. I've always wanted this. :)
Which book do you wish you'd written?
Any of the Psy/Changeling series, so then I'd know what happens next, lol. (I am not a patient soul)
What makes you happy?
Cakes and Pastry. Baby hugs. A good story. Finishing a project and knowing it's good.
What makes you angry?
Abuse. Laziness. Cruelty. Indifference. I think that last one the most, actually.
Name five people you'd like to invite to a dinner party?
1) Edward Burns—he's witty, he's a writer and he likes movies. He's perfect!
2) Sandra Bullock—the conversations I'd love to have with her.
2) Sandra Bullock—the conversations I'd love to have with her.
3) Liam Neeson—I don't care what he wants to talk about, I just want to hear him speak.
4) Anthony Hopkins—Another one I want to listen to, but his stories would be amazing.
5) Morgan Freeman—Clearly, this is a talking party. I just want to have interesting people chattering that I don't mind listening to.
What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
Crossed in front of a train that missed me by a half-second. (We were late getting home & very, very stupid.)
What inspired you to start writing?
My Mom, who was always writing something and reading. She gave me books and never once thought it was silly that I wanted to write some.
Where would you most like to live?
Somewhere cool and comfortable, where there's enough room for my family and enough space for me to have an office without putting anyone out.
What is your favorite curse word?
Fuck. And any creative combinations thereof, lol. I'm actually trying to stop using it, but there are some really impressive swear-artists out there. My sisters were quite talented, lol.
Who is your favorite man candy?
Oh, I have several favorites. In my fantasies, I get Gerard Butler, Eric Bana and Eddie Cibrian are playing brothers. :) But hands down, Eric Bana makes my heart beat like crazy. :)
Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
A woman is all that stands between a hunter and a killer. (OMG, I did it, LOL!)

Her compact, curvaceous body was laid out like some kind of offering to a pagen god. As someone who had once been a pagen god, he knew what he was talking about . . .
She cradled his head and bowed over him, wiping her damp cheeks with one hand. "We're so different from each other." "We live a long time. It's good to not be bored."
LYNETTE'S TWO CENTS:
Everyone
and there mother has reviewed this book, so I'm not going to bother with a
bunch of plot stuff, because if you haven't read it yet, you're probably
planning to and nothing I've got to say is going to change your mind, so I'm
just going to get to the point.
This
is the second Thea Harrison book I read Dragon
Bound being the first, where the cutesy beginning of the book annoyed the
crap out of me, but the great middle and end made up for the slow beginning. I
hope that the beginning of her next book is fleshed out more.
In
the beginning of STORM'S HEART, I thought that Tricks/Niniane was a wishy washy
annoying brat who lashed out on people trying to help her without a good
reason. Well, there was a reason, but it came over 100 pages into the story.
While the reason was a good one, it didn't help my opinion of her in the
beginning. I wish that her character was fleshed out a little more in the
beginning to where I didn't want to bash her upside the head for being a jerk
to Tiago when all he was doing was trying to help her. It was the classic, yeah
so you saved my life, I didn't need you, even though I can't really fight to
save my life and I was just lucky. I'm going to be a raving witch to you
anyway.
While
some find that type of perkiness endearing, I found it annoying.
Tiago
was also a little weird. In the beginning, I thought there was going to be some
m/m love with the descriptions Tiago was giving to his fellow sentinels and
co-workers. I mean really, what guy thinks about other guys the way Tiago was
unless they were going to screw them.
This
is just one example of several:
He wore a Jerry Garcia T-shirt that strained across his chest and at the biceps faded jeans with the knees torn out and steel-toed books, the treads of which had been imprinted on more than one Wyr ass. He had sun-bronzed, fine-grained skin with laugh lines at the corners of lion-colored eyes.
I
mean really. Just throw him on top of the conference table and have your way
with him.
Okay,
so despite all my snark STORM'S HEART is a good story once it got going. Once
Niniane finally decided to get around and explain herself, I found her funny
and understandable, and endearing. Also, once Tiago got over crushing on all
the other guys on the book, he stole the show with the fierce love and protectiveness
that he showed to Niniane.
I
loved at how they joined to try to uncover the conspiracy to discover who among
the Dark Fae were trying to kill her. Although, I knew who it was from the
moment the character appeared on the page, I enjoyed the journey Tiago and
Niniane took to discover the truth for their self. I also loved the respect
Tiago and Niniane showed for each other. They respected each other's strengths
and differences. It is sad to say that it is not often in romanceland that you
come across characters that respect each other, this is definitely not the case
inside STORM'S HEART.
I
can't wait to read the next story in this series.
