Interview/Giveaway with Fantasy/Paranormal Author Crista McHugh

INSIDE THE AUTHOR STUDIO
WITH
CRISTA MCHUGH

Growing up in small town Alabama, I relied on story-telling as a natural way for me to pass the time and keep my two younger sisters entertained.

I currently live in the Audi-filled suburbs of Seattle with my husband and daughter, maintaining my alter ego of mild-mannered physician by day while I continue to pursue writing on nights and weekends.
I am an active member of the Romance Writers of America (including the FF&P , Greater Seattle Chapter, ESPAN, Passionate Ink, and the Seattle Eastside Chapters),  Absolute Write, and Romance Divas.

Just for laughs, here are some of the jobs I’ve had in the past to pay the bills: barista, bartender, sommelier, stagehand, actress, morgue attendant, and autopsy assistant.

And I’m also a recovering LARPer. (I blame it on my crazy college days)

Describe yourself in one sentence?
A overworked, slightly snarky MD and mom who likes to retreat to a world of happy endings from time to time

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
The Little Women soundtrack (Winona Rider version), Pride and Prejudice, and dark chocolate peanut butter cups

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
An actress

Which book do you wish you'd written?
Twilight – if only I’d known how popular disco-ball vampires would be…

What makes you happy?
Seeing my daughter laugh

What makes you angry?
Stupid people -- seriously

Name five people you'd like to invite to a dinner party?
Out of the living: Lady Gaga, Jimmy Carter, Johnny Depp, Tina Fey, and Bono.

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
Hitchhiked through Scotland (although I didn’t think it was scary at the time)

What inspired you to start writing?
I needed some stress relief, and I had a bunch of stories in my head that were dying to get out.

Where would you most like to live?
Near where I am now (Seattle), but perhaps a little more into the Mountains

What is your favorite curse word?
Probably shite – it’s just fun to say

Who is your favorite man candy?
Right now, it’s Henry Cavill (my muse for the hero in my current WIP)

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
Two outcasts searching for a legendary treasure to save a dying race.

Guys, Crista is giving away a copy of The Tears of Elios to one lucky blog commentor. Leave a comment below to enter. Contest is open until Sunday, November 27th, 2011 Midnight EST. Good Luck.

(Lynette again. I am so honored to have Ms. Jenkins this week. I rarely gush over authors but Ms. Jenkins has been my idol since I walked in a bookstore way back in the day and saw one of her historical romances on the shelves. She is an amazing writer who writes with great historical detail. She is also the reason I took so many African American History courses when I was in college. Anyhoo. Sorry for the major gush fest here, back to the point . . . . Ms. Jenkins will be offering a copy of her latest release Night Hawk to a commentor to my blog. You have until Sunday, November 20th Midnight EST to enter. And you should, because seriously, Ms. Jenkins is just freaking amazing.)

Interview/Giveaway with Shiloh Walker

INTERVIEW WITH SHILOH WALKER
AND
GIVEAWAY OF IF YOU HEAR HER

Shiloh Walker has been writing since she was a kid. She fell in love with vampires with the book Bunnicula and has worked her way up to the more…ah…serious works of fiction. She loves reading and writing anything paranormal, anything fantasy, and nearly every kind of romance. Once upon a time she worked as a nurse, but now she writes full time and lives with her family in the Midwest.  She writes paranormal and contemporary romance, as well as romantic suspense.

In your previous Inside the Author's Studio interview on my blog, you mentioned that you always wanted to write. What led you to writing romance and what was the first romance novel that you've ever read?

I'm not entirely sure...It seems like I've always written, but in high school, most of the stuff I wrote was epic fantasy.  Then one day, I had an idea for a romance.  I can't say what it inspired it. I don't even remember which idea I first messed around with, really, although the first full-length book I wrote was No Longer Mine.

The first romance I read?  Rosemary Rogers' The Wanton.

You are a very prolific writer. How many books/novellas do you average in the year and what is a typical day in your "writing" life.

Oh, man.  I generally have 2-3 full length works contracted with my publishers, Ballantine & Berkley, in New York and I work in the shorter stuff around those, so it just depends.  Typically in the morning, I don't get as much writing done-I need to wake my brain up.  I do my errands, the post office, go to the gym, editing, whatever, and then I write from about noon to five or six.  I try to stop around then, because that's when my kids get home and unless I've got a heavy deadline crushing me, I try not to work as much when they are home.

You write in several subgenres of romance. I know it would be hard for you to pick a favorite, but can you tell me one aspect of each genre that captures your attention and makes you love writing in that genre?

I really can't... the reason I bounce around is because I've got a short attention span and bouncing around keeps me from getting bored.  Doesn't that sound terrible?

I loved, If You Hear Her. What made you come up with that series?

Lena.  It all started with her.  Her character just sort of appeared in my head.

One of the aspects that I love about your novels is the deep respect that the hero and heroine show for each other, even when they are on opposite sides of an issue. I know this is weird thing to say but I don't always find that when reading romance novels. Since you're characters are always what draw me to your novels, I've always been curious if when you are writing, do you come up with the characters first or the plot? Or does it depend and why?

It's almost always the characters.  They are there, and they have a story to tell me.  I'm just there to get their story on paper, so to speak.

I'm kinda dying here needing to know this . . .. Can you tell us what's coming up next in this trilogy?

Hope & Remy.  That's about all I've got to say on that issue... :)

(Lynette Here: If you could see me know, I'm making evil faces at Shiloh. They look something like this . . .)

(Lynette again: Sorry for the interruption. LOL.)

What are you writing now?

At this very moment...absolutely nothing.  I finished my current book, STOLEN, another romantic suspense, and I think I'm going to take a day to decompress and then I'll be starting on my next project, a book that will follow the world of THE MISSING and THE DEPARTED.

I saw a blog post where you mentioned that you recently got a great idea for a new series at Georgia Romance Writers? Can you give us a hint about that?

Um...no.  Sorry.  LOL, but I can't.  I'm slightly paranoid and when I talk about a story too soon, it kind of dies on me and I lose it.

And lastly because I'm looking in my kitchen as we speak and am realizing that I need to wrap this up so that I think about cleaning  up (thinking because I will probably sit and read instead of clean), if I looked in your kitchen now, would it be spotless, dirty, or disaster area?

Probably somewhere between spotless and I need to straighten it up a little. My husband is a borderline neat freak and I can't stand too much of a mess, but I'm too lazy to constantly be straightening up or cleaning.  So nothing in this place is ever spotless, but it never really gets to that dirty zone, either.

Thank you Shiloh for taking the time out of your busy schedule to speak with me today. Ms. Walker has graciously agreed to send a copy of If You Hear Her (awesome, awesome book by the way) see my review HERE to one lucky person who comments to this post. You have midnight Sunday EST to comment. Good luck!

INTERVIEW/GIVEAWAY with Thea Harrison

INSIDE THE AUTHOR'S STUDIO
WITH
THEA HARRISON

Thea Harrison is the pen name for author Teddy Harrison. Thea has traveled extensively, having lived in England and explored Europe for several years. Now she resides in northern California. She wrote her first book, a romance, when she was nineteen and had sixteen romances published under the name Amanda Carpenter.
She took a break from writing to collect a couple of graduate degrees and a grown child. She experienced waitressing as a teenager, has worked as an activist for a non-profit consumer rights organization, has been a receptionist, an office manager, a penniless graduate student, a director of development and research, and a single mom. Her graduate degrees are in Philanthropic Studies and Library Information Science, but her first love has always been writing fiction. She's back with her paranormal Elder Races series. The release date for her first paranormal, Dragon Bound, is May 3, 2011.
She adores animals and currently resides with several small pets that have very large personalities.
THEA: Hi Lynette, thanks for having me on your blog today!

LYNETTE: Umm, totally my honor. Let's begin . . .

Describe yourself in one sentence?

I can do that in one word: nerd.

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?

Argh, this kind of question is always so hard to answer!  This week my answers are:  Simon and Garfunkel’s Greatest Hits… one book?  Wail! … smoke is coming out my ears.  Just sayin.  Okay, the book I would take is Patricia McKillip’s Riddlemaster of Hed trilogy.  Yes, I know that’s three books.  But they are put out in one volume now, so that counts, right?

As for the food, it would be chocolate.  That’s the one answer that wouldn’t change.  It would always be chocolate.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

An architect.  Or Wonder Woman.

Which book do you wish you'd written?

Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

What makes you happy?

Lots of things make me happy.  A long, leisurely talk with a good friend; a cuddle with my dogs; the surprise of falling in love with a really great book; vacations; chocolate!

What makes you angry?

Injustice, rudeness, bigotry, cruelty.  Child or animal abuse.  Littering.

Name five people how you'd like to invite to a dinner party?

I played this game with my family recently.  I’m going to assume that the people could be dead or alive, or fictional, since this is all make-believe anyway.  I would like to invite Gandalf, since he has such awesome fireworks.  Also the Dalai Lama, Cate Blanchett, George Clooney, and Robin Williams.

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?

The most recent thing that comes to mind is driving hairpin turns on the way to Mendocino in northern California.  I’ve discovered I have quite a problem with that kind of narrow, winding road.  There were times when the road had no shoulder at all—it simply ended in a drop where the outside line was supposed to be.  I had to pull over several times to take a break.

What inspired you to start writing?

When I was a teenager and we went to stay at my aunt and uncle’s house in the country, I would read their books.  They had Zane Grey westerns and Harlequin romances.  Then when I was around sixteen or so I saw an article in People magazine about romance writers.  I was convinced I could do it too, so I wrote my first romance when I was nineteen.

Where would you most like to live?

I’m not sure, but I do know that water would be involved.  Lots of it.  Maybe a house on a large lake or by the ocean.

What is your favorite curse word?

Boogers.  Okay, anybody who reads my stories knows I get much saltier than that.  But boogers is still fun to say.

Who is your favorite man candy?

There’s so much good man candy out these days!  No doubt you’ll be relieved that I kept it down to one guy, two photos.  Today I’m picking Joe Manganiello, who looks good with or without clothes.

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
A very old boy falls for a very old girl.  They’re surprised.

Thanks again for having me, Lynette!  I had great fun answering your questions!

For the readers, who is your favorite man candy?

Lynette here . . . Thea is giving away a copy of her latest release Serpent's Kiss to a lucky blog commentor. Please respond to Thea's question in the comments to enter. INSIDE THE AUTHOR STUDIO: Interview/Giveaway with Karen Rose Smith

INSIDE THE AUTHOR'S STUDIO
WITH
KAREN ROSE SMITH

Karen Rose Smith's plots are all about emotion. She began writing when she listened to music and created stories to accompany the songs. After expressing feelings in poetry, earning a degree in English and French, completing short stories that became too long to find a market, she turned to her love of relationships in romance. This award-winning best-selling author has sold 75 books since 1991 and has published with Silhouette, Harlequin, Kensington and Meteor/Kismet. Her awards include the Golden Leaf in short contemporary romance, the Golden Quill in traditional romance, cataromance.com's award for Best Special Edition and Romance Review's Today's Best series romance award. Jane Bowers of Romance Reviews Today states: "Karen Rose Smith's storeyworlds are complete and realistic and lovely places to visit and revisit. She excels at stories that feature couples brought together by infants and children, and she handles her plots and characters with sublime sensitivity."

Karen is well-known for writing emotion. An only child, she spent a lot of time in her imagination and with books—Nancy Drew, Zane Gray, The Black Stallion and Anne of Green Gables. She dreamed of brothers and sisters and a big family like her mother and father came from, seven children in her mom's family and ten in her dad's. On weekends she was often surrounded by aunts, uncles and cousins. This is the root of her plotlines that include small communities and family relationships as part of everyday living. She believes universal emotions unite us all and that is the reason she uses them to propel her plots.

Inside the Author's Studio with Jackie Barbosa w/ Book Giveaway

For this week's Inside the Author's Studio, I'm pleased to welcome Jackie Barbosa!

INSIDE THE AUTHOR STUDIO
with JACKIE BARBOSA

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be a writer when I grew up, but there were plenty of times when I wasn’t sure I ever would be. As it turns out, it just took me about twenty years longer to grow up than I expected!

On the road to publication, I took a few detours, including a stint in academia (I hold an MA in Classics from the University of Chicago and was a recipient of a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities) and many years as a technical writer/instructional designer for a data processing company. I still hold my day job in instructional design, but my true passion is writing steamy romances–both historical and contemporary.

I learned to believe in love at first sight when I met the man of my dreams twenty years ago and to believe in happily ever after when I married him. I live in Southern California with my husband, our three children, and an ever-changing menagerie of pets.

Describe yourself in one sentence?
I'm a harried wife and mother, a tireless procrastinator, an inveterate punster, and an occasionally half-decent romance writer.

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
Gosh, can't I take my iTouch with its 800 songs and many books? That would be so much simpler. Plus, I'd volunteer not to bring a food. No? Hmmm, that's so difficult.

For record, I hope you mean a whole album and not just a single song. In which case, I think I'm going with Barenaked Ladies' All Their Greatest Hits through 2001. We had that get stuck in the CD player in my minivan once and we NEVER got sick of it. For book, I almost think I'd want to bring something super long that I've never read before. Maybe I could actually get through War and Peace or Moby Dick if I were stranded on a deserted island, you know? For food, I'd take hot sauce. Seriously, if I had to live for months on end without spicey food, I'd die :).

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
A writer and a teacher. I ended up doing both, although not necessarily in the way I planned as a kid. I always figured as a kid I'd teach high school, but then I discovered high school kids aren't always that happy to be there, and decided I'd rather teach adults. I went to grad school and was working on my PhD in Classics to become a college professor, then got derailed by combination of getting married and a bad economy that forced me back to work full-time. Fortunately, I "fell into" a job in a training department and that gave me the opportunity to develop technical writing and instructional design skills, which I now use in the job I've had in the software industry for the past 16 years. But the fiction writing bug I had from age 7 never really went away, and I'm so thrilled that I can now do that as well, even if it's not yet my main source of income.

Which book do you wish you'd written?
Oh, I don't wish I'd written any particular book, but I'd love to write a book as good and enduring as ALICE IN WONDERLAND (which I'd have to call my favorite book of all time).

What makes you happy?
Writing, when it's going well.

What makes you angry?
Writing, when it's going badly ;).

Name five people who you'd like to invite to a dinner party?
Do they have to be alive or can they be people who are dead? If I can invite dead people, my list would be:

Sappho (Greek poet--because I want her to fill in all the lacunae in her poetry, darn it!)
Livia (Augustus's wife for 52 years, who I think must have been a FASCINATING person)
Catullus (a Roman poet I'm convinced would be the life of any party)
Charles Dogdson (aka Lewis Carroll)
Mark Twain

If they have to be alive, then I'm going with:
Sandra Day O'Connor
Margaret Atwood
Barack Obama
Michael Hiltzik (he writes op-eds for the LA Times that I really enjoy)
Hugh Laurie

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
Raise children. As one of Ann Tyler's characters observes in the The Accidental Tourist, it's like being a firefighter: long stretches of boredom punctuated by short intervals of extreme terror.

What inspired you to start writing?
I started writing when I was 7yo (a story involving a fairy and a pumpkin, as I recall), but my mother says I used to tell stories out loud in the car when I was only 4yo. So it's hard to say any specific thing got me "started." I did, however, give up writing fiction for a long period of time, then suddenly got the "bug" again when I delved back into romance novels in 2005 after having read mostly other genres for about 10 years.

Where would you most like to live?
Probably in Mexico. In fact, we're planning a trip this spring to check out a city in central Mexico called San Miguel de Allende as a possible retirement venue.

What is your favorite curse word?
Haha, definitely the f-word. It has by far the most punch.

Who is your favorite man candy?
Currently, I have a thing for Coby Bell, who plays Jesse on BURN NOTICE. Yum.

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
Three heroes, three heroines, one brothel, and a whole lot of heat. (Just made it!)

Interested in receiving a copy? I know you are! Jackie is offering up on copy of Behind the Red Door to a lucky commentor. You have until midnight Sunday EST to enter. And make sure you look out for Jackie's upcoming April release Grace Under Fire!

Inside the Author's Studio with Beverley Kendall w/ Book Giveaway

INSIDE THE AUTHOR'S STUDIO
with Beverley Kendall

I have always loved books, romance and wished that everyone (most especially me) would find their happily ever after. Add in my love of London, England set in a period when ladies strived to be genteel and dresses could barely fit through doors, and it was obvious I could write nothing but historical romances.

As the mother of one too bright and mischievous young boy, I pull full-time duty on all fronts. When I'm not working at my techy-type job, mothering, writing or reading, I'm probably sleeping and dreaming of a time when I'll have time for my favorite hobbies: knitting, crocheting and sewing.

Describe yourself in one sentence?

I’m creative to my very soul.

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
My Love by Paul McCartney and Wings, A Whole New Light by Sandra Brown and mangoes.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I wanted to be a published author.

Which book do you wish you'd written?
Sarah’s Child by Linda Howard

What makes you happy?
My son, my family and friends and reading and writing.

What makes you angry?
People who can never see that the glass is half full.

Name five people how you'd like to invite to a dinner party?
President Obama
Oprah Winfrey
Norman Rockwell
Stevie Wonder
Norm Abram from New Yankee Workshop

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
Sent my manuscript off to be critiqued.

What inspired you to start writing?
My love of reading and my desire to change stories to suit myself.

Where would you most like to live?
In a state with all four seasons on the east coast, on a level two acre plot of land with a wrap-around porch.

What is your favorite curse word?
Ass.

Who is your favorite man candy?
The guy on the cover of Lauren Dane’s Insatiable.

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
Pride and Prejudice meets The Taming of the Shrew with more heat.

Everyone leave a comment to thank Beverley for an awesome interview and to win a copy of her latest release A Taste of Desire. You have until midnight Sunday EST to enter. Good luck!
