Friday Ramblings: I Still Believe In Fairytales

WARNING. I DON'T CALL THESE POSTS FRIDAY RAMBLINGS FOR NOTHING. THERE IS NO RHYME OR REASON IN THIS POST! I AM TRULY RAMBLING!

Last week was a crappy weekend for me that culminated with me having surgery on Friday. The hubster has been out of town and this procedure had been scheduled before we knew that he was going to have to be out of town for several weeks for work. Anyhoo, I was going to cancel, but I found someone who was willing to drive me to the procedure and back and pick the kiddos up from daycare. This person cancelled on me the morning of the procedure, I mean it was literally about an hour and a half before I was supposed to be at the hospital. So, I had to scramble to find someone who would be able to take me at the last minute and my in-laws volunteered. Because they wouldn't have been able to pick me up in time and drive to the hosptial. I ended up driving myself to the hospital myself and they met me right before I was knocked out. By the way, I would just like to thank my father-in-law and step-mother in-law for not thinking to mention to the hospital staff that their daughter-in-law was some black chick. LOL! This oversight on their part caused some confustion and delayed them coming back to see me before I went under. They were also great because they picked up the kiddos from daycare and had them stay the night with them, which helped me as I was knocked out the rest of the night.

I did have the kids Saturday and I was still hurting a little bit. I spent Saturday lying on my living room sofa while my children wrecked havoc around me. While I was lying on the sofa flipping through the channels Cinderella was on. It was the version with Brandy, Whoppi Goldberg, Bernadette Peters, and Whitney Houston. I quickly turned it on and for some reason, I also decided to record it. Bad move!

Folks, I haven't been able to stop watching! I can't help it, ya'll! I don't think I watched anything else all last weekend. I was getting on Queen's nerves. I got the six-year-old equivalent of 'you're watching this sh-t again,' every time she came in the living room. And no she didn't actually say that, but if she was older and she thought she could get away with it, I'm sure she would've! The look on her face as she watched me watching Cinderella was the same, 'What are you doing Mommy,' look I get when I wake her up in the middle of the night to go potty. 'What are you doing Mommy,' is what she actually says, because after all she is only six. What she means is, 'Look you crazy SOB, why are you still waking me up in the middle of the night to carry me to the potty. I haven't had an accident in weeks. Why aren't you sleep? You stayed up reading and watching that crappy Cinderella movie again, didn't you? What's up with that, theirs not even cartoons on it. Just for ruining my sleep, I'm going to stay up for awhile and drive you bat sh-t crazy by demanding that I'm thristy and hungry. And just for good measure I'm going to be loud enough to wake up the baby, so you'll have to deal with both of us. Maybe then you'll learn not to disturb my sleep for some lame a-s reasons.'

What? Are you saying my kids are the only ones who give me that look! Well try waking yours up at 3AM and try to get them to go potty and see what happens!

Anyhoo, I drifted. Back to Cinderella!
Have you watched it? If you haven't its freaking awesome. I don't know if it's because I was still drugged up or what. But it has to be my favorite adaptation of Cinderella. I don't know if it's because of the diverse, talented, multi-cultural cast or what. I just know that I can't stop watching. I'm obsessed.

Cast of Characters:

Brandy: Cinderella:

I was never a big Brandy fan. I never watched her television show, and I think I only had one of her albums. Although I know it's stupid, back in the day, when she was popular in the black community you were either a fan of Brandy or her counterpart Monica. I always preferred Monica. I thought Monica was a better musical talent personally. Although Brandy and Monica hated the divide and they even tried to change people's opinions and record a single together, I still thought Monica totally showed up Brandy in the single. Seriously, Brandy was awful and seemed like she was muttering her lyrics.
And just because I'm going back down memory lane, here is the single I'm talking about. In case you didn't know, Brandy is the one in braids. Tell me who sang it better!

Awful here wasn't she? However, I must say her singing rocked it in Cinderella. I don't know who was pushing her, but I never heard her sound better than she did in this musical.

Paulo Montalban: Prince Christopher

Okay, is this guy hot or what? Maybe I'm just a big old horn dog or something. But this guy totally does it for me. There is this one scene in the beginning of the musical where Paulo's at the marketplace and he bends down to help Brandy with her packages and he looks up and sees her. The look on his face when he looks at Brandy, I'll never know why she didn't just drop her panties right there and say take me! Okay, I know this is a Disney production but still. I think there should be a remake and this aspect needs to be explored.

Then later, he's in the palace about to go in and talk to his parents and he's putting on a shirt and we get a glimpse of his chest. Not to be missed! LOL! That scene totally beat Colin Firth and the wet t-shirt scene in Pride and Prejudice for me.

It doesn't hurt that he's a good actor and singer as well. I know my personality enough to know that I wouldn't have bought into his hotness if I didn't believe in him and believe in the role he was playing. There are a lot of non verbals in Cinderella and he plays them beautifully. I totally bought into that he was in love with Brandy and that she was the only one that would do for him and that's because of his performance.

Also, I'm totally pissed that he hasn't become a huge star! He certainly has the talent. Is he on Broadway somewhere that I don't know about? Please tell me! If he is I'm catching a plane to NYC right at this moment!

Whoppi Goldberg: Queen Constantina
Victor Garber: King Maximillian
Whoppi Goldberg and Victor Garber totally rocked it in their parts. Victor Garber did an awesome job playing the straight man to Whoppi Goldberg. Plus it was obvious that they were having a fun time together and with their parts. Because of their considerable skills as actors, they conveyed a lot with the little they were given.

Jason Alexander: Lionel
Bernadette Peters: Cinderella's Stepmother
Sorry, but what can you say about the legendary Bernadette Peters, except she is da bomb. Jason Alexander was also wonderful. I guess you're tired of me talking about how wonderful everything was, so let me tell you what sucked dog doo doo.

Whitney Houston: The Fairy Godmother
Whitney Houston sucked. Yes she can sing, but WTF. She was a horror in this. I know she was the Executive Producer but girl, you know you were probably high and smoking something during this show. She was too over the top and had the 'I'm Whitney Houston so I am a diva and of course, I'm the bomb and the real star of this musical.' Sorry, I wanted to gag every time she appeared. Also, I was totally pissed that the end of the musical was focused on her and not on the Prince and Cinderella. Whitney Houston is singing this song at the end making sure she's getting all the face time when all I wanted to see was Paulo stick his tongue down Brandy's throat and rip her clothes off and make some babies. LOL!

Here is the scene that pisses me off. The quality isn't the greatest, but see how Whitney Houston destroy's it. If it helps, the scene starts off with another of my favorite parts when the Prince and Cinderella are reunited and the Prince realizes she's the same girl from the marketplace that he encountered at the beginning of the movie!

But other than that, if you haven't seen this movie. Do so, immediately!

This is one of my favorite scenes!

And because I'm such a moron. I found this clip when they were promoting the special on the old Rosie O'Donnell show! The first couple minutes are of Brandy and my boyfriend singing another one of my favorite songs from the muscial. I dare you to watch and not fall in love with my boyfriend! At the end of the song when he takes her hand . . . I blush every time!

Why yes, I have issues! Sue me!

BTW. It's a week later and I'm still watching it every night. And this week sucks too, sick kids! Hope everyone has a great weekend and a great holiday weekend for those of us in the U.S!

Aww, sorry about your pre-surgury mishaps and I hope you're feeling better!

Lol @ Queen. At her age, if my mother did that to me, I probably would have uttered the adult version. I wasn't a potty mouth back then like I am now, but I know the 2 things that could set me off back then. 1.)Waking me up when I wanted to sleep and dream of mighty morphing power rangers or 2.)interrupting me while I watched saturday morning cartoons. So your actions would have snow balled into the mother of all kiddie tantrums which then would have lead to a spanking of a lifetime!

As for Brandy's version of Cinderella, I LOVE IT ALSO! I remember watching it when I was younger (had it on VHS and wore it out within a year of its purchase). Whitney was fab in that movie also and I love whoppie!! The songs we're great too, and even to this day, when the mood strikes, I may preform it during my weekly 'shower-time' musicale' .

The guy was gorgeous as well ;) ..

Love the ramblings ! Keep them coming!!

I haven't seen Brandy's version of Cinderella, but I'm going to have to watch it now! I still love watching fairy tales-sometimes there just isn't anything better for the soul then them. :) I hope you're feeling better from your surgery!

I haven't seen this movie in several years! But I remember enjoying it. Now that you mention it, it does have a good repeat watch factor.
