Interview and Contest: Inside the Author's Studio with Nana Malone

INSIDE THE AUTHOR'S STUDIO!

This week's Inside the Author's Studio is with debut author Nana Malone, so come take a look around, get to know her, and enter to win a copy of her latest release!

My love of all things romance and adventure started with a tattered romantic suspense I borrowed from my cousin on a sultry summer afternoon in Ghana at a precocious thirteen. I've been in love with kick butt heroines ever since. With my overactive imagination, and channeling my inner Buffy, it was only a matter a time before I started creating my own characters.

Waiting for my chance at a job as a ninja assassin, I, meantime work out my drama, passion and sass with fictional characters every bit as sassy and kick butt as I thinks I am. Though, until that ninja job comes through, you’ll find me acting out scenes for hubby and puppy while catching up on my favorite reality television shows in sunny San Diego.
Describe yourself in one sentence?
I’m a driven enthusiast with a love of food, dancing and good books.

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
Record: Michael Jackson’s Thriller
Book: Harper Lee’s”To Kill a Mockingbird”
Food: Plantain. Lots and lots of plantain. I love it pretty much any way you can prepare it.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I had no idea. I wanted to be an MTV VJ, but realized I was too shy to pull it off and my Ghanaian parents would have a fit. So then I thought CIA agent, and realized I’d have to improve my lying skills. Then I thought I’d be great at PR…please see earlier comment about shyness. You see the pattern?

Which book do you wish you'd written?
You’re kidding right? Twilight. Holy Phenomenon.

What makes you happy?
My daughter.

What makes you angry?
Stupid people

Name five people how you'd like invite to a dinner party?
Clair Huxtable (The Cosby Show) because she was just awesome. You need a strong woman in charge to organize the troops.Elizabeth Bennet (Pride and Prejudice) Because she loves her family fiercely, is strong and capable of enormous love.Jason Bourne (The Bourne Identity) I like having a bad ass as a dinner companion just in case something breaks out.Holden Caulfield (Catcher in the Rye) - Because you always need one misfit at a dinner party Gabriel Aubry (Halle Berry's ex man) - Just cause he's pretty :)

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
Packed my bags and moved to London without a job, a place to stay, or being registered for school.

What inspired you to start writing?
Though I've always been a voracious reader, my writing career started with Bridget...Jones that is. I was in New York hating pretty much every aspect of my PR job but the writing when I picked up Bridget Jones's Diary from the library. After I stayed up all night to finish it, I wished I could do that, put words to paper and make people laugh or cry or cringe. Then I thought, why not.

Where would you most like to live?
London minus the rain :)

What is your favorite curse word?
I will always have a strong preference for the word FUCK. It can be used in so many instances to convey so many things. Though, I must learn to curb the cussing lest that be baby’s first word.

Who is your favorite man candy?

No. I refuse to choose just one. You can’t make me! I already mentioned Gabriel Aubrey. But there’s also Clive Owen and Orlando Bloom and Daniel Craig. (I like Brits) And let’s not forget my fellow hawt Ghanaian Boris Kodjoe. I’ll also cop to my inner 12 year old’s crushes (Rob Pattinson, Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez) I’m sorry, but I did love N’Sync

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
A sexy thrilling romp that will make you believe in reunited love. (Ha! 12 exactly)

Everyone thank Nana for stopping by and comment below to win a PDF copy of Game, Set, Match her release with Wild Rose Press!

REVIEW: The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan

THE HEROES OF OLYMPUS BOOK 1: THE LOST HERO
Rick Riordan
ISBN #: 978-1-4231-1339-3
Disney Hyperion
October 2010
Page Count: 553
Price: $18.99
Young Adult/Mythology/Paranormal

BACK COVER BLURB:

Jason has a problem. He doesn’t remember anything before waking up on a school bus holding hands with a girl. Apparently she’s his girlfriend Piper, his best friend is a kid named Leo, and they’re all students in the Wilderness School, a boarding school for “bad kids.” What he did to end up here, Jason has no idea—except that everything seems very wrong.

Piper has a secret. Her father has been missing for three days, and her vivid nightmares reveal that he’s in terrible danger. Now her boyfriend doesn’t recognize her, and when a freak storm and strange creatures attack during a school field trip, she, Jason, and Leo are whisked away to someplace called Camp Half-Blood. What is going on?

Leo has a way with tools. His new cabin at Camp Half-Blood is filled with them. Seriously, the place beats Wilderness School hands down, with its weapons training, monsters, and fine-looking girls. What’s troubling is the curse everyone keeps talking about, and that a camper’s gone missing. Weirdest of all, his bunkmates insist they are all—including Leo—related to a god.

COVER SNARK:
No issues. The cover is actually a pretty accurate description of what happens in the book.

FIRST LINES:
Even before he got electrocuted, Jason was having a rotten day.

LYNETTE'S TWO CENTS:
I am going to try to write a review of THE LOST HERO without giving away any spoilers. I find it literally impossible. BUT I'm going to do it, so this review is going to suck, I'm warning you upfront, so you can't complain about it! If you followed the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, it ended with a brand new prophecy about seven new demi-gods who are going to save the world and the gods. I wouldn't exactly call THE LOST HERO a continuation of the Percy Jackson series, I would say it's taking everything we thought we knew about the Percy Jackson world and turning it upside down. I liked that, even though for me it wasn't very suspenseful, I personally guessed what was going on in the first couple pages, there was enough action and mysteries revealed that it kept my attention despite that.

Jason wakes up with no memory of himself sitting next to a girl who says she's his girlfriend, and mysterious markings on his arm. When monsters attack his school field trip he is whisked away to Camp Half-Blood where he learns that he is the son of a God. He learns that Hera has stolen his memories and that she has been captured. A quest is set up to save Hera and hopefully Jason will be able to get her to restore his past. To accompany him on the quest are his friends Piper and Leo while the majority of the campers try to figure out where Percy Jackson disappeared too.

This review totally blows. But if I say anymore it would be a total spoiler. I swear peeps this whole book is page after page of spoilers. It is totally impossible to talk about this book without giving away anything or anything that happened in the Percy Jackson series. But the book totally rocked, and I'm pissed that the next book won't be released until next fall. WTF. I'm wondering if the main character of that book will be who I think it is (yes, even that would be a spoiler) but I don't think it will be because that would be too easy.

Sorry for the crappy review, but totally go out and buy this book, but it'll be best if you started out with the Percy Jackson series first.

Inside the Author's Studio with Josh Lanyon w/ Book Giveaway

INSIDE THE AUTHOR'S STUDIO

In this week's Inside the Author's Studio, I am pleased to welcome Josh Lanyon. Please take a moment to get to know Josh and enter to win a copy of his latest release Blood Heat!

A distinct voice in gay fiction, multi-award-winning author JOSH LANYON has been writing gay mystery, adventure and romance for over a decade. In addition to numerous short stories, novellas, and novels, Josh is the author of the critically acclaimed Adrien English series, including The Hell You Say, winner of the 2006 USABookNews awards for GLBT Fiction. Josh is an Eppie Award winner and a three-time Lambda Literary Award finalist.

Describe yourself in one sentence?
Josh Lanyon: not what you expect

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
Only one record!? Then I'd take the mega CD my SO made me with my favorite cuts from about sixty albums. For my single book I'd grab The Art of Murder by Raymond Chandler, which I've always intended to read but never got around to. For food...an endless supply of chips and salsa and margaritas. (Hey, if I'm going to be stranded, I may as well enjoy myself!)

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I always wanted to be a writer. From the third grade on it was absolutely determined to make it as a writer.

Which book do you wish you'd written?
Louis Bayard's Mr. Timothy. He's got such a smooth, readable style -- and a marvellous gift of invention. I'm intensely jealous.

What makes you happy?
My garden

What makes you angry?
Stupidity. Especially self-righteous stupidity. People who wear ignorance like a badge of honor.

Name five people how you'd like to invite to a dinner party?
I'd love to have a dinner party with some of my favorite writer friends, but I wouldn't dare offer that guest list for fear of leaving someone off. So...I'd like to dine with Raymond Chandler, Jesus, Thomas Jefferson, Amy Lowell, and George Harrison. I want to sit next to Jesus, though.

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
I used to routinely mix pills with drinking. I did that for years as a matter of fact, and then one day it finally dawned on me I was probably going to eventually kill myself. The scariest part is that it took me years to figure it out.

What inspired you to start writing?
I always loved telling my sibs and friends -- and anyone else who would listen -- stories, so I think it was a natural progression to putting it all on paper. I think it's my Celtic ancestry. We're all born storytellers.

Where would you most like to live?
The west of Ireland or the Outer Hebrides. Failing that, rural Oregon.

What is your favorite curse word?
Fuck when I'm really irked. Crikey when I'm merely frazzled.

Who is your favorite man candy?
He refuses to submit to being photographed. ;-D How about a picture of a Stick Man?

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
Will and Taylor: the boys are back in town!

Friday Ramblings: Things Romance Writers Do That Drive Me Crazy!

The other day, I received a review request from a publishing house. The publishing house wanted to know if I was interested in receiving a review copy of an author's latest release because the author specifically requested that I review their book. I was extremely flattered by the request, because if any of you guys have read any of my reviews (if you haven't, why not, I'm amazing if I do say so myself - LOL), you know that I suffer from a condition called diarrhea of the mouth. This condition makes it literally impossible for me to NOT inform you of what drove me bat sh-t crazy about a book. So I was flattered that this author specifically requested that I review her latest release. The blurb sounded interesting to me and I shot off an e-mail agreeing. After I sent the e-mail off, I went on to Goodreads to find out more about the author and what I found left a sour taste in my mouth and spawned . . . .

Things Romance Writers Do That Drives Me Crazy!

5. YOU ARE YOUR OWN GREATEST CHEERLEADER (NOT): I completely understand that no one will love you like you love yourself. But WTF. STOP GIVING YOUR OWN BOOKS 5 STAR REVIEWS. I am tired of going on review sites like Goodreads, Shelfari, Amazon and the like and seeing that you have given your own work 5 stars. That is so freaking tacky. Please, please, please stop. Also, while I am on that note, this applies to you too, publishers and editors. You always say that romanceland is a small community, but that goes to you too. We know who you are, so if we see you on Goodreads or Amazon and the like, giving books you published or edited five star reviews, that annoys us and makes us not want to buy your author's book and depending on the size of the publishing house and your position, anything from your publishing house.

And sort of on this note, romance authors. Going to your website and seeing that you are an Award winning author does not entice us to buy your books, especially if you are a newly published author. If you can't preface the Award winning author with the type of award it is, like New York Times Bestseller, USA Today, RITA Award Winning, don't do it. PLEASE. Sorry, we really don't care that you won a couple RWA Chapter Contests unless it's the RITA or GOLDEN Heart, because really, even I've won a couple of chapter contests, LOL.

4. I LOVE EVERYONE JUST THE WAY THEY ARE: Authors, don't bother rating the books you've read if you're going to give everything an A or B or 4 or 5 stars. I understand about wanting to show support for your friends, lovers, brothers, whatever, but it is just not believable. We are not stupid. We know you are doing it just so you can get your readers to buy your friend's books. That just annoys us and makes us hesitate over buying YOUR books in the future. I would admire you more if you gave a book you liked one, two, three stars and just didn't elaborate futher then if you went around giving EVERYTHING four and five stars. Stop making me cringe when I go onto author's pages and see the constant barrage of four and five star reviews. I'm sorry if I'm offending people, but we are totally onto you on that one.

3. IF YOU CAN'T DO IT RIGHT, DON'T DO IT AT ALL (SOCIAL NETWORKING 101): I'm a Twitter addict. And it drives me nuts when authors get on Twitter and only post links to good reviews of their books, what they posted on their blog, and the like. Of course, you should promote yourself and your brand, but not to the exclusion of all else. That is not the point of social networking. Authors, the majority of your tweets should not be about you tooting your own horn, or promoting yourself. While you don't have to tell everyone that your husband considers cleaning up wiping the counters down and putting dirty dishes in a sink full of soapy water, or you had to hold your daughter down last night to get her to brush her teeth, and your son kicks you out the bed when he sleeps with you because despite only being two he likes to stretch out horizontally across the bed and freaks out if your too close despite it being your freaking bed . . .. (Oops, on a tangent, see what fun things you can learn about me if you followed me on Twitter – LOL). Anyhoo, you don't have to be that open; however, you do have to show traces of your personality. Do you like jewelry, shoes, whatever? Talk about that. Take a picture with your phone of something you're contemplating buying that's not too personal. Are you on deadline? Tell us how many words you managed to write today. Or a snippet about a character your writing. Heck, some authors take pictures of their cats on their computers. Something. And, while I'm on the subject because this really annoys me . . . don't bash Twitter and say you don't like it or it's not worth doing just because you don't understand how to use it effectively. Once again, if you can't do it right, don't do it at all.

2. I LIKE TO GIVE A SHOUT OUT TOO ALL MY PEEPS. Come on, you know what this one is don't you? How many times have you opened up a romance novel only to learn that the heroine, or some other character loves romance novels and is conveniently reading either another of your books, or books by friends of yours. No, dear author just because your characters say they love the books is not going to make us want to run out and read the books as well. It makes us think badly of you and want to gourge our eyes out, or not buy your books. Sorry about that. That also goes for book blurbs, when we read them.

But, I do have to admit, I thought this blurb by Sherrilyn Kenyon aka Kinley McGregor was full of awesomeness and cracked the f up when I first saw it several years ago when the book came out.

1. IT IS BETTER TO KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT THAN OPEN IT AND REVEAL TO THE WORLD THAT YOU ARE BAT SH-T CRAZY! Do I really need to know about your sex life, your personal fights with other writers, editors, publishers. Do I really need to see a picture of you posted in your underwear, even if you do write erotica. Do I really need to see You Tube videos of you stimulating a sexual act. Not really. Please spare me.

So this is it. These are some of my pet peeves. Take a moment in the comment section and tell me some of yours! Can't wait to hear about them!

REVIEW: Rebel by Zoe Archer

Book Title: REBEL
Author Name: Zoe Archer
ISBN #: 978-1-4201-0681-7
Publisher Name: Kensington Publishing Corporation/Zebra Books
Date Released: November 2010
Page Count: 432
Price: $6.99
Genre: Historical: Paranormal/Adventure
Book Format: Print

BACK COVER BLURB:

On the Canadian frontier in 1875, nature is a harsh mistress. But the supernatural can really do you in…

A Lone Wolf

Nathan Lesperance is used to being different. He’s the first Native attorney in Vancouver, and welcome neither with white society nor his sometime tribe. Not to mention the powerful wildness he’s always felt inside him, too dangerous to set free. Then he met Astrid Bramfield and saw his like within her piercing eyes. Now, unless she helps him through the harsh terrain and the harsher unknowns of his true abilities, it could very well get him killed…

And The Woman Who Left The Pack

Astrid has traveled this path before. Once she was a Blade of the Rose, protecting the world’s magic from unscrupulous men, with her husband by her side. But she’s loved and lost, and as a world-class frontierswoman, she knows all about survival. Nathan’s searing gaze and long, lean muscles mean nothing but trouble. Yet something has ignited a forgotten flame inside her: a burning need for adventure, for life—and perhaps even for love…

COVER SNARK:

Great cover concept. Though, since Nathan is running around Canada half-naked (ala Jacob in the Twilight Series) despite my usual aversion to man-titty covers, I would've loved to see that. Or Astrid as is with a wolf guarding her. Also, the guy on the cover looks older to me and Nathan is only twenty-eight. Yes, I'm being very nitpicky. Sue me!

FIRST LINES:

The two men tumbled over the muddy ground, trading punches and kicks. A sloppy fight, made all the more clumsy by a surfeit of cheap whisky and punctuated by grunts and curses. Nobody knew what the men were fighting about, least of all the men themselves. It didn't matter. They just wanted to punch each other.

FAVORITE LINES:

"You don't have to fight anyone for me," she said.

"Except you."

Oh God. He leveled her with a few words and searing looks. She felt herself in a dizzying plunge, wanting the flight, worried about the landing. "I give as much as I am able," she said.

"I know," he answered.

"I know that you'll survive the upcoming battle," he said, "because I'll be fighting right beside you and I'll lay down my own life to protect yours."

"I . . . oh," she said. It took her some moments to understand. "You . . . will come with me?"

"Your fight is my fight," he said. Stark and direct, his words filled her with unsparing joy. "Your cause is mine. And more than that. Your heart is my heart. I love you, Astrid. My place is with you. Always with you."

The following quotes below are not from the hero and heroine of this novel, but from my crush on Catullus Graves who if you read the series (and if you're not why not) and you are not in love with him, something must be seriously wrong with you and you need help.

"Sparks from the pistol ignited the chemicals. Burns for a long while." He sent a wary glance toward Nathan, though it skittered away at the sight of Nathan's undress. "Not as sensational as turning into a wolf or bear, but it worked."

Nathan's smile was brief but honest. "Next time, you can have a magical bear skeleton tear at your chest."

"Must I? Hate to ruin this beautiful waistcoat. It's Italian."

"I smelled you coming," he whispered after shifting into his human form.

Graves, crouched low, face shining with perspiration, grimaced as he neared. "At this point, none of us are particularly crisp. Even me." He glanced down ruefully at his once pristine waistcoat, now grimy and torn, and the scuffed toes of his formerly gleaming boots. Thank God it was dark, or else the man might have been so dismayed by his appearance he'd be inconsolable.

He stepped in something, dodging a swinging sword, and slipped going down on one knee. An unidentified substance dampened and stained the knee of his formerly immaculate Saville Row trousers.

"If I make it out of this maelstrom," he muttered, "I'm burning all these clothes."

LYNETTE'S TWO CENTS:

Guys, after all my talks about how I find it impossible to finish a Zoe Archer book in under a week despite how good they are, I finished REBEL in like 2 days!

I can go on and on about how well-rounded the Astrid and Nathan are, but I won't. I will say what I loved most about Astrid and Nathan was how realistic their relationship arc was. Astrid has been mourning the lost of her husband for the past several years. Her grief has caused her to isolate herself from the world. Nathan, because of his heritage and how that heritage was ripped away from him always found himself on the outside looking in, neither Native American nor white. I loved how all this wasn't glossed over, that they didn't take one look at each other and all the emotional angst went away. That wasn't done in REBEL. I loved how that during their journey their internal insecurities were slowly drawn away and how that made them stronger as a couple. With each book in the Blades of the Rose Series, the relationship development gets stronger, deeper, and more emotional. While REBEL didn't blow me away like SCOUNDREL did, I enjoyed this entry to this series very much. I even believed int the power of Astrid and Nathan's relationship more than I did London and Bennett and I LOVED Bennett (especially) and London.

Now, to the main focus of my review. I think I rushed through REBEL because one, the pacing of REBEL was more compelling and fast paced to me. And too, I think because while Catullus has always been my favorite blade, seeing him in REBEL just melted my heart and I wanted to rush through REBEL so that I could get to his story in STRANGER.

Because I am not afraid to admit it, I am in love with Catullus Graves! Back off, he is mine!

Describe yourself in one sentence?
While wearing the romance writer hat, it's got to be "I'm a writer of fun romance stories."

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
Hmmm. Desert meaning no water? I guess I probably won't want to stay there long then. Therefore I'd like a James Bond tricksy kind of record that can transform into a perpetually fueled jet pack allowing me to fly away, please. I'm not sure I'd have time to read a book before getting dehydrated, so I'd rather explore the beach for an hour or so before getting thirsty and jetting away. Food = It'd just make me thirstier, so none thanks. I'm really thirsty now.

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
Wealthy! With a dragon hoard of gold and silver coins, jewel-hilted daggers, strings of pearls dripping out of precious goblets and firey opals the size of my fist.

Which book do you wish you'd written?
Getting Rid of Bradley by Jenny Crusie

What makes you happy?
At this moment, hot mint tea while watching the rain outside.

What makes you angry?
Disloyalty. Unfairness. My next-door neighbors.

Name five people how you'd like invite to a dinner party?
I'm not in a position to bring off a decent dinner party at the moment. Soon hopefully.

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
Public speaking.

What inspired you to start writing?
A teacher.

Where would you most like to live?
Somewhere the neighbors are either far away, or else kindly & quiet.

What is your favorite curse word?
All of them, but applied sparingly.

Who is you're favorite man candy?
My handsome husband. He's pretty sweet-looking all over but his forearms & hands are works of art.

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
Marionette operator versus hardass business tycoon: who will ultimately pull the strings?

Christina has graciously offered up an electronic copy of her latest Samhain release. Please leave a comment to let me know that your interested in winning a copy along with  a way for me to contact you.

Good luck!

REVIEW: Scoundrel by Zoe Archer

SCOUNDREL: BLADES OF THE ROSE BOOK 2
Author Name: Zoe Archer
ISBN #: 978-1-4201-0680-0
Publisher Name: Kensington Publishing Corporation/Zebra Books
Date Released: October 2010
Page Count: 400
Price: $6.99
Genre: Historical: Paranormal/Adventure
Book Format: Print

BACK COVER BLURB:
The Blades of the Rose are sworn to protect the sources of magic in the world. But the work is dangerous—and they can’t always protect their own…

READY FOR ACTION...

London Harcourt’s father is bent on subjugating the world’s magic to British rule. But since London is a mere female, he hasn’t bothered to tell her so. He’s said only that he’s leading a voyage to the Greek isles. No matter, after a smothering marriage and three years of straitlaced widowhood, London jumps at the opportunity—unfortunately, right into the arms of Bennett Day.

RISKING IT ALL...

Bennett is a ladies’ man, when he’s not dodging lethal attacks to protect the powers of the ancients from men like London’s father. Sometimes, he’s a ladies’ man even when he is dodging them. But the minute he sees London he knows she will require his full attention. The woman is lovely, brilliant, and the only known speaker of a dialect of ancient Greek that holds the key to calling down the wrath of the gods. Bennett will be risking his life again—but around London, what really worries him is the danger to his heart…

COVER SNARK:

This cover wasn't full of the awesomeness that Warrior (the previous release) cover was. The problem might be mine, because Bennett is so full of awesomeness that I don't think anyone can make him be as awesome as he is in my mind.

FIRST LINES:

The bloody problem with magic was that he wasn't allowed to use it.

Bennett Day ducked as a heavy marble bust of Plato flew toward his head. It smashed into the wall behind him, leaving a sizeable hole that could have easily served as the philosopher's allegorical cave.

FAVORITE LINES:

"Do you ever have ordinary days?" she asked as they ascended the stairs.

"Why would I want them?"

"You mean," she breathed, "you're in love with me?"

I don't care what words anyone uses," he growled, stopping his pace to stand in front of her. "Use the words of all the languages you know. Or make some up. Doesn't matter. What matters is that I want to be with you forever. Only you. And I hope to God," he said his voice rough as he stroked her hair, her face, "that you only want me." There was no glib charm now, only the raw truthh of his heart, laid bare before her.
She buried her face against his chest, solid and broad, allowing herself this moment to fully lean on him, take some of the strength he readily offered. "I don't regret my choice," she said, her voice muffled as she pressed herself tight. "If I had to, I'd make the exact same decisions. But it hurts so damned much."

"Give me your pain, love," he said holding her against the steady beat of his heart. "Let me take it for you."

She shook her head. "No, the pain is mine to bear. I need it." She took a ragged breath. "To make me stronger."

LYNETTE'S TWO CENTS:

If you remember, the other week I reviewed WARRIOR, the first book in Zoe Archer's Blades of the Rose series. I stated that I loved the premise, but the pacing and other factors made me not connect to the story like I wanted to. I stated that I would keep reading the series because the premise was so unique and interesting. So, I picked up SCOUNDREL not expecting much and . . .

I was like WOW!

I laughed from the first page and SCOUNDREL didn't disappoint as I kept reading. I think now that the problem with WARRIOR that she spent so much time introducing her world and she fell in love with that particular setting that the pacing dragged to me. I didn't feel like that in SCOUNDREL even though it was still two people going on a journey. I believe the reason why I didn't have the "Are We There Yet," feeling with SCOUNDREL like I did with WARRIOR is because of the strength of London and Bennett as individuals. London and Bennet are two skillfully, three-dimensional characters and I loved as each of their layers peeled away. I totally bought into their relationship and they're happily ever after. London had such a transformation to go from to accepting Bennet, her father's reality, to discovering herself as a woman, and I loved how Ms. Archer skillfully drew out that transformation.

If you haven't read this series, you are totally missing out. You must, must, must read this series.

Just a warning. These are not books that you can quickly scan through; at least they aren't for me. I am usually a quick reader, but I find it literally impossible to finish one of her novels in under a week and I usually have to read something else while I'm reading one of her books. Each word Ms. Archer crafts is lyrical and a journey in itself. The words she crafts are a journey to the senses and it's impossible to have your eyes quickly scan the pages. For example:

Certain moments in one's life would always be returned to, even years, decades later. Some of them were painful- heartbreak, mortification, loss, but there were others that had the clarity and perfection of cut gems, to sparkle against the velvet drape of memory. And, as the years progressed and unfolded in their relentless march, again and again would the mind revisit those moments. Eating a plum, the juices running down your hand, as you walked an esplanade along the shore. The day that the weather cleared and the ground was finally firm enough to be ridden upon, and the leap of your heart as your horse took the first fence. A new old book being delivered and unwrapped from its brown paper, sitting upon your desk, full of possibility, and the musty, rich smell of its pages as you opened it.
I mean come the f on. Remember in National Treasure (what you never watched that movie, where have you been) where Benjamin and Abigail were talking and Abigail says, no one talks like that and Benjamin says yeah, but they think it. I mean, no one writes like this anymore . . . except for Zoe Archer.

I've become a convert.

Inside The Author's Studio with Kris Cook and Book Giveaway

INSIDE THE AUTHOR'S STUDIO!

For this week's Inside the Author's Studio, I am please to have Kris Cook! Please take a moment to get to know him and enter to win a copy of his latest release!

A military brat to the core, Kris Cook never put down deep roots in any particular geographic location. Until Texas. Why? Kris loves the sun.

A voracious reader, Kris loves many genres of fiction, but this writer’s favorite books are romances that are edgy, sexy, with rich characters and unique challenges. Kris’ influences include JR Ward, Lora Leigh, and Shayla Black.

Kris has won and placed in several writing contests in the past couple of years.

Kris’ motto: I like cooking up really hot books for my readers. The hotter, the better.

Kris's Two Cents

Describe yourself in one sentence?
I’m a distractible dreamer who loves to travel, enjoys the company of friends, devours books, and likes a glass of wine in the evening…maybe two.

What are the one record, book, and food, you'd take to a desert island?
Record: U2's The Joshua Tree
Book: JR Ward's Lover Awakened
Food: Thai. Love it!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?
An actor, writer, producer, director, king of my own island, vampire (don’t ask…my mother considered therapy – lol!).

Which book do you wish you'd written?
Only one? Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (aka … Sorcerer’s Stone). It got kids reading again.

What makes you happy?
Warm days. Cool nights. A great review of one of my books. An email from a reader. Finishing a book. Reading.

What makes you angry?
Cold days. Colder nights. A bad review of one of my books. Getting stuck on some point in a book I’m working on that I can’t puzzle out. Not having time to read.

Name five people how you'd like invite to a dinner party?
JK Rowling
JR Ward
Sherrilyn Kenyon
Anne Rice
Stephen King

What's the scariest thing you've ever done?
I was in Chicago with a friend who told me he knew the way to the restaurant we were supposed to meet friends for dinner. My friend was mistaken, and took us through some very terrifying areas. At one point, a block up from us a car’s tires squealed as the made a hard left into an alley. Seconds later, we heard what sounded like gunfire. We finally did make it to the restaurant, and I made my friend pay for several shots and my dinner.

What inspired you to start writing?
The books I read transported me on such wonderful adventures and introduced me to such incredible characters that I knew for a very young age I wanted to be a writer.

Where would you most like to live?
Anywhere it is warm. I love Texas and California very much.

What is your favorite curse word?
Sometimes you’ve just got to bring out the big guns – the F-Word.

Who is your favorite man candy?
Well, I’m looking in the mirror right now. LOL!

Sum up your latest release in no more than twelve words!
One woman. Two hunky immortal prisoners. Unimaginable cravings ignite inside this threesome.

Would you like to win an electronic copy of Kris's latest release? Take a moment to leave a comment and you'll be entered into the contest! The contest will run until midnight Sunday, November 14th, 2010. Good luck!

REVIEW: Perfection by Kris Cook

Perfection [Eternally Three] (Siren Publishing Menage Amour)Book Title: PERFECTION (ETERNALLY THREE: BOOK 1)

Author Name: Kris Cook
ISBN #: 1-60606-552-4
Publisher Name: Siren Publishing, Inc.
Date Released: September 2009
Genre: Paranormal Erotica Romance/Ménage
Book Format: eBook

BACK COVER BLURB:

While searching for her missing brother, Micki Langley visits a nightclub with a notorious reputation as ménage a trois central and comes face-to-face with two amazing men straight from her fantasies.

Ancient jinn Jared endures heavy guilt and wants nothing to do with the human girl. Tripling is necessary to keep immortals alive, but his hunger for Micki is far beyond normal.

Though warrior angel Bradley completes their threesome, he despises Jared for his tainted reputation. He vows the jinn won't hurt the gorgeous human and has no problem fighting him to prove it.

But when the threesome comes together, they share more than an exchange of energy, they share an unshakable bond that generates astounding power. Their enemies seek to destroy their perfect triad, which could unsettle the balance of power between angels and demons. Will the threesome be able to stand strong together - in trust and love - to defeat the relentless evil?

COVER SNARK:

I personally didn’t like the cover. The book is so much better than the f me cover in my humble opinion.

FIRST LINES:

I met Lillian only a week ago. Now, she is dead. I know for certain that she wasn’t crazy. If I don’t figure out how to stop what’s happening, I will be dead in three months, Micki in nineteen. How do I tell her?

LYNETTE'S TWO CENTS:

I’ve seen Kris around on Twitter, loved his tweets but I had never read a book of his. So, I started searching, downloaded a copy of his first release read it and immediately sent him an e-mail begging him to do an interview for my blog, which he graciously agreed to do. Look for his Author’s Studio interview shortly.

PERFECTION is a hot, erotic romance. From the first page you immediately get pulled into Micki’s quest and feel for her and the emotions that she’s going through. I immediately connected with Micki, which surprised me, because as you know from reading my blog, I often find some of the heroines in books I read annoying twats. I did not feel that way with Micki. However, having said that, I did find it hard to believe that she would quickly jump into a ménage despite the . . . nevermind that would be a spoiler. Anyhoo, theirs a great psychological as well as physical reason why Micki needs to be in a ménage relationship, but while the reader and the other two men in the ménage know the reasons, Micki did not. I was annoyed that despite the umm heat she was in that she didn’t question more, and I was annoyed with Jared and Bradley for not telling her everything right up front. It took me a minute to get over that.

Not that much of a minute, because the smexing was scorching. Really scorching. I appreciated that the smexing wasn’t just an insertion of random body parts, and was filled wish caring and respect. I also loved the uniqueness of the plot of how the angels, demons, human’s, djinns, and how they all interrelated and needed each other to survive. My only gripe with PERFECTION is that I wished that the emotions of the three characters were delved into more deeply so that I could buy into their happily ever after a little more. Of course, that didn’t stop me from buying the second book in this series, so call me a big fat old hypocrite!
